Alexander Vladimirovich Mertens – economist, consultant, and executive. Expert in corporate finance, strategy, corporate governance, direct and venture investment, financial risk management, and macroeconomics.
Professor of the Finance Department at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.
From 2009 to 2015, consultant for the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
Graduated from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (specializing as an economist-mathematician), and completed postgraduate and doctoral studies at the economic faculty of the same university. Internships at the London Business School, Cass Business School at City University (UK), Dalhousie University (Canada), and the World Bank Institute for Economic Development.
From 2006 to 2009, president (rector) of the International Institute of Business (IIB), a leading Ukrainian business school. From 2002 to 2006, academic vice president (first vice rector), and from 1997 to 2010, professor of economics and finance at IIB. Leader of the Executive MBA and International MBA programs, and course leader for the CIMA program (The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) at IIB.
Author of open and corporate training and consulting programs for top management on corporate finance and governance, business valuation and investment planning, mergers and acquisitions, mutual fund operations, investment portfolio management, risk management, strategy, and direct and venture investment.
Head of over 40 consulting projects on business strategy, business valuation, and structuring M&A deals, corporate governance, and IPO preparation.
From 1996 to 2001, head of the consulting company Kyiv Investment Agency. In 1994-1995, vice president of the investment company OLMA Ukraine.
Author of books “Investments: A Course of Lectures on Financial Theory”, “Interest Rate Risk”, “Financial Markets”, “Microeconomics for Public Policy Analysis”, and articles in international and Ukrainian academic and business journals. Regular speaker at international and national conferences of financial market professionals.
Married, with two sons.
